Gainsborough Trinity 2 Rushall Olympic 0

Gainsborough Trinity 2 Rushall Olympic 0

In this second qualifying round of the FA Cup, Trinity held their nerve against their more physical opponents and two well taken goals meant they progressed to face Stockport County in the next round. In an even first half, both teams came out to play attacking football but Trinity were the first team to put a move together with Simon Russell firing over from 25 yards out.

With 10 minutes gone, Trinity had a penalty appeal turned down as Darryn Stamp felt he was pushed in the box. Rushall’s best chance in the first half came on the half hour mark, when a fast paced break saw them cannon a ball against the post but then back into the welcome arms of Phil Barnes. That was the closest Rushall came all game and as the half wore on, both Bradley Barraclough and Darryn Stamp had chances to put Trinity in front, but both missed their chances.

4 minutes into the second half Trinity had a deserved goal after debutant Jordan Thomas jinked and turned in the box and put in a cross which Barraclough met, but was expertly saved by the Rushall keeper. The ball broke to poacher Stamp who nodded the ball home.

Trinity never looked back from that point and took the game to Rushall with Johno Williams driving forward before substitute Josh Batty played a perfect cross for Liam Davis to volley in at the back post and seal the tie.
