An Alex Simmons close range strike was the only goal of the game as Trinity started their pre-season campaign with a hard-fought victory over NECL side Winterton Rangers on a glorious summers’ evening. Winterton Rangers fielded two different sides in each half barring their goalkeeper, Lewis Tomlinson, who spent last season with Gainsborough Trinity’s successful under 18 side.

Gainsborough trialled a new look system in the first half as boss Dave Frecklington cast an eye over trialists Kyle Dixon and Charlie Gator, whilst handing first starts to Richard Walton in goal, Jonathan Wafula, Nathan Stainfield, Shane Clarke, Johnathan Williams and the goal scorer, Alex Simmons. A change in formation at the break helped the Holy Blues exert more pressure, but resolute defending by the hosts and a lack of composure in the final third meant the score line wasn’t added to.

In the closing stages, Winterton almost earned a share of the spoils when a dangerous free-kick on the right almost bent all the way in, striking the base of the post before the danger was cleared.
