Jacob McLoughlin replaced Jordan Helliwell in midfield. The youngster making his first competitive start for the blues. Frank Mulhern continued his return from injury, making his first start, coming in for Fraser Preston. The hosts pressed and won a couple of early corners, but Trinity defended them well, before forcing one of their own, when Bobby Johnson set Sisa Tuntulwana free. McLoughlin had to be alert, as Workington countered. The youngster recovering well to intercept. Allowing his colleagues to get back.

Aaron Simpson was starting to enjoy some forays forward down the right hand side. And he was able to provide the first of what would be two assists in half a dozen minutes when he drove to the byline before squaring to Lewis Butroid. Butroid making no mistake from close range to grab his sixth goal in all competitions. The Gainsborough lad continuing his fine run of scoring form from last season - into this!

Harrison Beeden, alongside Will Lancaster, at the heart of the Gainsborough defence had to be switched on - as the hosts looked to go long to the big man, Rigg, up top. But Beeden was doing well to marshall that threat and Rigg was being forced deeper. One quickly became two. Frank Mulhern this time profiting from more good play down the right hand side. Javelle Clarke sliced open the visiting defence, playing in Simpson - and his ball across the face of the six yard box - was tapped home by Mulhern. A routine finish, but a welcome goal for Frank, getting himself up and running for the season.

Lancaster was defending bravely and putting his head where it hurt to deny Workington any advantage. David Symington's dangerous balls into the box repelled by the Trinity centre back. Clarke was on the receiving end of a number of challenges, but continued to show for the ball, as he relished the attention. The home side becoming frustrated with their performance. McGarragher had a half chance as the game ticked towards the interval, but in truth it was a routine gather for David Robson - and Simpson - in the final action of the half - fizzed an effort goalwards, as the whistle blew for half time.

Half Time: Workington 0 Gainsborough Trinity 2

Workington came out fired up at the start of the second half - but perhaps a little too fired up. The home skipper, Symington went in, over the top on Lancaster, causing a flashpoint. An unsavoury reaction that prompted a reaction from the fouled, ultimately saw Workington reduced to ten, as Symington was sent for an early bath. And Lancaster and 'keeper Robson booked for their part in the aftermath.

Ten minutes into the second half, Wilcox turned to his bench and replaced Mulhern and Tuntulwana with Preston and Rotherham youngster, Ayres. But it was nearly the hosts who got one back, when Gregg McCarragher did well to pick out Leslie with a long cross, but Leslie got his header all wrong. And failed to trouble Robson.

The game, becoming disjointed with substitutions for both sides nearly saw a goal from Ayres. Eleven minutes from time, the on loan Mansfield Town man, Jakub Kruszynski did well to slip in Ayres off the flank. He cut in, before cracking his effort back off the upright.

In the last six minutes, the ten men of Workington enjoyed a little more of the ball, but Lancaster and Jackson defended stoutly - and it had looked like Trinity had weathered the mini storm, when Butroid looked to release Ayres away, but Steven Swinglehurst's cynical foul, halted him in his tracks.

Trinity couldn't quite hold on to what would have been their eighth clean sheet of the campaign, as deep into four minutes of added time, Josh Galloway's centre found Rigg rising highest, to power home, giving Robson no chance. But it eas a case of a little too late for the hosts - as Trinity saw out the game. Securing all three point - and climbing to fourth in the table, five points off top spot, with a game in hand.

Not a bad night's work, on a chilly evening at Borough Park - thr hardy supporters making the pilgrimage, rewarded with a well-deserved victory! Next up for Russ Wilcox's men, the trip to Redditch United in the Isuzu FA Trophy, on Saturday. We prepare to go again, let's go!
