An unchanged eleven, with only one tweak to the matchday sixteen. Dylan Cogill returning to the bench following his suspension. Jordan Hallam making way for the Club Captain's inclusion. In yellow and black, Trinity were everywhere in an action packed first half. Aaron Simpson in the wars as he was twice on the receiving end of some rough treatment. The first on seven minutes, Declan Howe encouraging Simpson forward - when at pace - he was cleaned out by home skipper Jameel Ible. Trinity were giving the hosts no time to settle. Going a little longer, on a difficult pitch, and landing on the second balls. Experienced midfielder, Bobby Johnson, continued where he left off on Saturday -getting around the pitch well. And winning more than his fair share in the air too.
A two goal blast, either side of the twenty minute mark - and the damage was done. Declan Howe dispatching from the spot after he was hauled down by centre back Bentley. The youngster rather fortuitous not to receive his marching orders. Howe dusting himself down, cooly picking his spot and tucking the ball, neatly into the corner. Guiseley's Joe Cracknell guessed the right way, but couldn't stop Dec from notching number thirty-seven
The opening goal sparked a frenzied spell of pressure from Wilcox’s men. Lewis Butroid dragging wide following a slick move involving Preston and Clarke. Clarke t
hen seeing his shot blocked by Ollie Brown, before Johnson stung the hands of Cracknell, with Howe flagged offside as he followed in the rebound.
Four minutes after the opener though, Trinity did have the second goal their performance merited. And it was Lewis Butroid who saw his name up in lights once again. Profiting from more good work from Howe - Butroid guided home his twelfth of an ever-profitable campaign for the homegrown hero.
Half hour in, Lewis Whitham looked to cause Trinity problems as he cut in off the Guiseley left. Trying his luck from 25 yards, he saw his effort blocked, before Jack Emmett tried to get in down the same side, but the retreating Simpson had the situation under control.
Howe then found space in between the two centre backs, and Butroid’s lifted ball over the top found the Gainsborough-goal-getter. Still with a lot to do, Howe brought the ball down well, but didn’t really get hold of his effort, straight at Cracknell.
Half Time: Guiseley 0 Gainsborough Trinity 2
In the second half, Guiseley threw on their big hitters. But even with their introduction, David Robson was rarely troubled. Dealing adeptly with a couple of high balls into the box, the ex Hull City ‘keeper was an assured presence.
Picking their moments, Trinity attacked with real purpose and intent. With the outside of his left foot, Preston released Jordan Helliwell down the right. Squaring a superb ball across the face of goal, whilst on the run, Howe was the intended target. And as he was pulling the trigger, he was denied his second goal of the game, thanks to some fine last ditch defending by Ible, taking the ball off his boot.
Simpson was keeping John Lufudu quiet as he switched wings. Snuffing out the nippy forward's forays forward. And the one time Hickingbottom and Lancaster couldn’t clear their defensive lines, Robson was out bravely to smother the danger at the feet of Gabriel Johnson.
Bobby Johnson’s inswinger of a left sided corner posed problems for Guiseley. Hickingbottom keeping the ball in the dangerzone. Howe trying the acrobatics, and Lancaster straining to get his head to the ball seeing his effort crash off the face of the goal frame.
Bright, Butroid intercepted a loose pass and looked to bear down on goal. Tripped by Ible, Mr Palmby waved away the appeals. Before Howe was harshly judged offside as Lucas Odunston appeared to play the striker on-side from Preston’s quick thinking.
Still Guiseley struggled to break down a determined Gainsborough rearguard, and Trinity could celebrate their win that sees them finish the season, with the sixth best away record in the division. And now, one final game remains. Leek Town the visitors to the Kal Group Stadium. Russ Wilcox's men will be determined to ensure the season ends on a high. Though not fully in Trinity's hands. A sixth place finish is not out of the realms of possibility..
Following Saturday's game, from 6pm until late, The Blues Club will be hosting the End of Season Awards Night, including a video review of the season, followed by live entertainment. Entry is free & a cracking night is expected.
