Russ Wilcox was again able to keep faith with his starting line up that had chalked up three straight wins - with the substitutes all chomping at the bit to be involved. And all who would play their part, in a special final day at a sunkised Kal Group Stadium (Northolme).
Declan Howe's brace, making it six in his last four games, were richly deserved as he led the line and tormented the Leek backline with his movement. By the time he had opened the scoring on thirteen minutes, with an exquisite finish from Fraser Preston's clever pass to unlock the visitors' defence - Howe had already been denied by Xander Park as he tried to finish from a tight angle - and was also forced wide only to flash an inviting ball across the face of goal.
Trinity were enjoying the final day. Bobby Johnson was trying to break his goal drought for the season. A sighter and an ambitious volley coming at the end of patient Gainsborough moves. At the other end, Alex Hurst was looking lively, for Leek and Trinity's lead only lasted eight minutes. A mis-placed pass was capitalised on by the visitors, Quickly turning over possession & Hurst got away down the left. Will Lancaster couldn't cut out the pass & the former West Brom youngster finished, firing low past David Robson to draw the visitors level.
Leek enjoyed a spell after the equaliser. Their tails up... but Simps
on was causing problems for Leek as he looked to get forward down the right. One overlapping run from full back saw him deliver for Howe, but the ten was unable to generate the power with his header, to trouble Parke.
Robson was then called into action, saving low to his left, as Hurst threatened again for the visitors, though it was the hosts with more of the ball. Hurst did look a menace when he was given the ball. The sides though, had to settle for going in at a stalemate. Though a more than watchable spectacle for the first half.
Half Time: Gainsborough Trinity 1 Leek Town 1
Russ sent out the same team for the second half, and Howe continued to look the most likely though, as both sides rang the changes. Xander Parke called into action on a couple of occasions as Howe pierced the back line. Less than ten minutes in, Wilcox began to ring the changes. Providing minutes for Dylan Cogill, Dylan Wharton, Bailey Conway, Curtis Durose & George Hornshaw.
Hurst, leading his sides forays forward, got his finish all wrong as he tried to bend one with the outside of his right. Wide of the now Wharton's right hand upright. Cogill just on as a sub himself, tried to get on the end of Fraser Preston's dangerous inswinging corner. But it was well defended at the near post, the ball sent behind for another corner. That one eventually finding Cogill, but he couldn't add to the goal he scored against Workington. His scuffed effort blocked enroute to goal.
Cogill was again involved. This time floating a ball up to Howe, which Dec did well to cushion on his chest for Jordan Helliwell to play the ball in for the ever-moving Howe. Taking the ball on the spin, he forced a good save out of Parke low down to the goalkeeper's right. Bobby Johnson's corner seemingly to everyone in the ground, headed behind by an orange shirt - but the goal kick was awarded - as Trinity continued in their quest to find a winner.
Cogill's cross-field ball was met by George Hornshaw. His knock down finding Bailey Conway 25 yards from goal. He looked to pull the trigger, but saw his effort blocked. Ashley Jackson also trying his luck - from even further. But it was comfortable for Parke. Hurst looked to cut in off the left hand side, and was given too much room to get a shot away that was deflected behind for a corner. Virtually his last contribution, before he was replaced by Ty Onyeka.
Hornshaw and Curtis Durose were linking well down the Gainsborough right, providing a steady stream of balls into the box. Liam Edwards floated in a freekick, that was well attacked by Nathan Okome, but Bobby Johnson was alert to the danger. Heading clear, before Trinity did finally find the breakthrough when Howe dived full length to help home Conway's pinpoint cross, after good work from Curtis Durose. Two of Trinity's five changes playing a key role in the winner.
