Preseason Game One: Club Thorne Preview

Update: Rearranged for Thursday. The long-awaited return to action is almost upon us. After an elongated off-season, the Holy Blues kick their pre-season campaign into life with a trip to Club Thorne on Tuesday evening, as Russ Wilcox’s men ready for another season in the Northern Premier League. We make the near 30 mile trip (via the A161), to take on Club Thorne Colliery in the first friendly of the 2024/25 pre-season schedule.

Thorne finished top of the Humber Premier League last season, returning to step six for the first time in 38 years. As for Trinity, we finished eighth in the Northern Premier League, narrowly missing out on the play-offs after a surge up the table thanks to an incredible run of results in the second half of the season. Wilcox and co. have gone about their summer business well. They have returned an exciting core of players from last season’s successful post-New Year run, and added a few new names, most recently former Guiseley goalkeeper Ollie Battersby.

On the Club Thorne side, there is one familiar name, Jamie Green, a Liam King signing who excelled under Curtis Woodhouse when with the Holy Blues. He joined the Doncaster-based outfit at the back end of last season’s promotion winning campaign, and has signed again for the upcoming season. So he will be a familiar face in the opposition line up, if he is back from his recent stag-do! We wish our former Blue all the best for his upcoming wedding, to the lovely Emma.

Another to watch out for is Szymon Czubik. He made his first appearance for Thorne on Friday night, but has excellent pedigree. The forward’s previous clubs include now League One Stockport County, Bury, Goole and Frickley Athletic. At 25 years of age, he has good experience that could prove valuable for Thorne this season, in their first at step six in nearly forty years.

Gainsborough head into a seven game pre-season schedule on Tuesday night, travelling to Thorne and Bottesford Town, before hosting Scunthorpe United. The Holy Blues then return to the road to face step five Lincoln United, before rounding out the schedule with the visits of League One Barnsley, Championship Sheffield United, and National League newboys Boston United.
