Simpson began his career in non-league, down south, with Maidstone United. It was during the 2014/15 season that Aaron caught the eye of Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers, earning himself a two-year deal. Although he didn’t make a league appearance for Wolves, he went out on loan to Portsmouth, AFC Telford United in the National League North, Scottish Premier side, Kilmarnock and Futbol Club Jumilla, in Spain. Speaking on the signed Aaron enthused:

"I've really enjoyed pre-season so far! Feel like I have settled in really well and the lads have been really welcoming. Having played at this level last year and looking at the squad, I think it will be a really exciting season!"

Following his release from Wolves, Simpson spent a short period in Ireland, before returning to England with Dover Athletic. Seasons at Sutton United, Hemel Hempstead Town and Chippenham Town followed, before most recently he spent his successful season at Salisbury, making 27 league appearances, scoring twice, in their promotion campaign. Away from the game, Aaron dabbled in reality TV, when back in 2021, he was a contestant in the seventh series of Love Island, that shouldn’t detract away from his dozen or so appearances for Sutton though, as he helped them win the National League, subsequently gaining promotion to the football league.

Wilcox was pleased to get the deal done, ahead of Trinity’s final pre-season fixture, the home game against Boston United on Saturday, "It's great to finally get this deal over the line. A big thanks to Dave Horsley and the board for their support."

Explaining the decision to add the full back to the squad, Wilcox added, "Aaron will be an excellent addition to the squad. He’s settled in really well with the group. He’s got good experience at this level, after getting promoted last season with Sailsbury FC. He adds quality, experience and what’s required to be successful. I’m delighted he’s on board. Welcome to Gainsborough Aaron."
