Harry Burgoyne is the man between the sticks for Often. He is the man changed with replacing former Trinity stopper George Willis. Willis departed in October to pursue opportunities within the Sheffield United coaching setup. Whilst towering centre forward Beck is on loan from Scunthorpe United, and with the Iron still to enter the competition, the striker may not be granted permission to play in the fixture. A number of players, like Willis, have appeared for both clubs. Liam Waldock moved from the Holy Blues, to the Reds. Bobby Johnson and Fraser Preston in the current Gainsborough squad have spent time in the red of Alfreton Town and will be looking to spring an upset against one of their former sides.
Dec Howe and Dec Bacon both represented the two clubs - as have a few others. A little further back, names like Ant Wilson and Paul Clayton may be recalled by the Trinity and Alfreton faithfuls. The last time the sides met at the Northolme in the Trophy, ended goal-less. The game going to a replay at the Impact Arena. The replay in Derbyshire, four days later, ended 4-1 to Alfreton. Matty Wilson ending up in goal, on a night to forget for the Holy Blues.
The original tie wasn't much to remember either! Dense fog consuming the Northolme and making visibility nigh-on impossible. Fortunately, replays are now a thing of the past in the Isuzu FA Trophy. And th
e winner will be decided by penalty shootout, should the game be level at the end of ninety minutes.
In the last eight meetings, Alfreton hold the upper hand. Trinity have won one. Drawn two, but lost the other five - but as has been touched on many times - this side under Russ Wilcox have something special. Heart, desire and ambition. That spirit, coupled with the undoubted talent at Wilcox’s disposal - and a look at Gainsborough’s recent cup successes... in the bosses' two full season's in charge - the lowest ranked side to beat the Blues in a cup competition - National League Woking!
Can we dare to dream again?
